Frequently Asked Questions
SAP Extended Warehouse Management: Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about SAP Extended Warehouse Management engagements with MYGO Consulting.
What is the difference between SAP WM and SAP EWM?
SAP WM provides basic warehouse functions like storage bin management and goods movements. SAP EWM adds advanced capabilities including wave management, task interleaving, labor management, MHE integration, yard management, multi-level storage bin management, and complex storage strategies. SAP has announced that WM will not be available in S/4HANA beyond compatibility releases, making EWM the strategic warehouse solution.
Should we use embedded EWM or decentralized EWM?
Embedded EWM runs within S/4HANA and suits organizations with simpler warehouse requirements or single-site operations. Decentralized EWM runs as a separate system and is recommended for high-volume warehouses, complex automation, or organizations needing independent warehouse system availability. Our practice leads have a selection criteria that combines system architecture decisions with the economics of operations to make the right recommendation for your situation.
Does MYGO have an offline warehouse capability?
Yes. MYGO has developed a state-of-the-art accelerator that empowers your warehouse to execute end-to-end operations in offline mode with automatic synchronization of data when connectivity is restored. This is critical for warehouse environments where network reliability is a constraint.
Can SAP EWM integrate with automation equipment?
Yes. EWM includes a Material Flow System (MFS) that integrates with conveyor systems, sortation equipment, and AS/RS through standard communication interfaces (TCP/IP or OPC-UA). For AMRs and goods-to-person systems, we build integrations through the vendor's API layer. Our team has integration experience with Dematic, Swisslog, KNAPP, Locus Robotics, and 6 River Systems.
How long does a typical SAP EWM implementation take?
A single-site EWM implementation covering core inbound, outbound, and internal processes typically takes 5-7 months. Implementations that include MHE integration, voice picking, or yard management may extend to 8-10 months. Multi-site rollouts follow a template approach with 3-4 months per subsequent site.
What RF hardware does MYGO support for EWM?
We have deployment experience with Zebra (TC52, TC72, MC93, WT6300), Honeywell (CK65, CT60), and Vocollect voice solutions. Our pre-built RF transaction templates include optimized screen layouts for different device form factors, and we configure device settings and network connectivity as part of the implementation.
What training approach does MYGO use for warehouse operators?
We develop role-based training programs for operators, supervisors, and warehouse managers. Operator training is hands-on with RF devices in the warehouse environment, not classroom-based SAP GUI training. We train a group of super-users first who then assist with training their peers. Training materials include quick-reference cards for RF transactions that operators can carry on the floor.
